Dr. Schmidt is a clinician scientist who specializes in the comprehensive surgical management of head and neck cancer. His clinical practice and laboratory research program are closely integrated and focused on the identification of cancer biomarkers and the symptomatology of cancer and cancer treatment. Dr. Schmidt earned a PhD as well as MD and DDS degrees from the University of California at San Francisco. He completed his head and neck oncology training at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Schmidt held a faculty position at the University of California San Francisco from 2002 to 2010. He was the Director of the Oral and Maxillofacial Oncology Fellowship and of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Training Program at the University of California San Francisco. He was also the Vice Chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Effective July 1, 2010, Dr. Schmidt was named the Director of the Bluestone Center for Clinical Research at New York University. He is also appointed as a Professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and is principal investigator on three NIH-funded clinical and basic science research projects.
